Obstetricians-gynaecologists, they are everywhere but what exactly do they do and when is the right time to pay them a visit?

An obstetrician-gynaecologist is a doctor who specializes in female reproductive health. OB-GYNs can specialize either or both obstetrics and gynaecology. Obstetricians fall under the branch of medicine that involves medical and surgical care given before, during, and after a woman gives birth. OBs focus on taking care of the pregnant mother and her baby during maternity. Their services are needed in the pregnancy, during labour, during childbirth, and until the postpartum period.

While gynaecology mainly focuses on the women’s body and their reproductive system. They give diagnosis and treatment to illnesses pertaining to female’s reproductive system including the vagina, the ovaries, the fallopian tubes, and the uterus. Gynaecology covers are wider scope compared to obstetricians because their care starts from puberty throughout adulthood.

What is an OB-GYN?

As mentioned earlier, they are doctors who have specialized training in obstetrics &gynaecology. They provide preventive gynaecology care and gynaecology services such as pelvic exams, ultrasound, pap smears, and blood work. The OB-GYNs are the go-to person to answer your questions about pregnancy, reproductive health, infertility, sex, and everything under the sun concerning female reproduction.

When should you visit your OB-GYN?

The ACOG (American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologist) encourages females to start receiving gynaecology care between 13 and 15. The first visit is just to establish rapport between the physician and the teen. No particular exam is done at this stage unless the teenager has medical problems or has been sexually active.

The first pap smear and pelvic exam may be done by age 21 or by the time they are engaging in sex. ACOG also recommends that women visit their Obstetrician-gynecologists annually. However, if you are want to do STD Testing, suffered from a suspected pregnancy or miscarriage, you are having pregnancy complications, you are feeling pain during sex, you suspect infertility or you have questions about sexual health then you may visit your OB anytime you deem fit.
